What I’m Looking For

I specialize in memoir (check out my book), but these days, I have to confess that I’m a bit selective about the clients I work with. Essentially there are three kinds of stories I’m looking to write, and three kinds of stories I’m correspondingly not looking to write:

What I’m looking to write:

Memoirs of people who have done extraordinarily unique things or lived unique lives filled with passion.

What I’m not looking to write:

Memoirs of people with self-aggrandizing stories about their business successes. (Zzzzz…)

What I’m looking to write:

Memoirs of people who have overcome great hardships or difficult circumstances and whose stories may be inspirational for others who might be suffering similar hardships or circumstances.

What I’m not looking to write:

Memoirs of people who are still working on overcoming their circumstances and are hoping to use the writing of the book as therapy. (You’re better off telling your story to a licensed therapist rather than me.)

What I’m looking to write:

Memoirs that explore the human condition and which would therefore be of universal interest to a large readership.

What I’m not looking to write:

“Legacy” memoirs of one’s life that one is looking to pass along to friends and family. (Nothing in the world wrong with these; they’re just not in my area of interest.)
